Cory Booker Communications Director Resigns

Newark, New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker's communications director Anne Torres has resigned in the wake of the heroic mayor's controversial "Meet the Press" remarks.

Booker's office released the following statement from Torres on Monday:

Effective today, I am resigning from my position as Communications Director. It has been a pleasure to serve in this Administration for six years, and as a Newarker, there is no greater reward than to work for the city that you love. I?ve had the opportunity to work with an amazing team, and wish the Mayor the best.

Torres said she has "nothing bad to say" about Booker in a phone interview with the Wall Street Journal.

"It's just time for me to move on," Torres said, noting that she's "taking a long vacation" now that she's resigned.

In his May 20 appearance on "Meet the Press," Booker said he was "uncomfortable" with President Barack Obama's re-election campaign attacking rival Mitt Romney over his time at Bain Capital.

"This kind of stuff is nauseating to me on both sides," Booker said. "It's nauseating to the American public. Enough is enough. Stop attacking private equity."

The Obama campaign recently released a series of documentary-style videos portraying Romney as a job-destroying corporate takeover artist. After chastising the videos, both Booker and Obama worked to clarify the statements.

Results will be shared with the public.

Over three years ago, I decided to give up artificial sweeteners in an effort to fill my diet with as many real, whole foods as possible.? As a former Diet Coke addict, it was a very sad day.? Not only did I say goodbye to diet soda, but I also had to say goodbye to a few of my favorite, low calorie drinks such as Crystal Light and Diet Snapple.?

It wasn't until the warmer months that I realized just how much I was relying on artificial sweeteners to quench my thirst.? Although I've always enjoyed iced tea, I often added a splenda or two.? In my defense, these low calorie sweeteners were key in helping me achieve long term weight loss in 2007. Nonetheless, fake foods are fake foods. As Jillian Michaels said, "Only eat food that comes from the ground or has a mother."? Last time I checked, splenda doesn't have a mommy.

These days, I keep things interesting?by infusing iced tea with various flavorings such as fresh herbs or ginger. A perfect example?of this is?my Orange Ginger Tea. Today I decided to infuse fresh mint and a bit of fizz with sparkling water at the end.? It's the perfect Summer drink.

Mint Iced Tea Spritzer

20 mint leaves (about two long stems)
10 bags black or green tea
10 cups boiling water
Sparkling water (such as LaCroix)
Lemon slices

Place mint leaves and 10 tea bags in a big pitcher.? Pour boiling hot water over the mint and tea, let steep for 30 minutes or longer; let cool.? To serve, fill tall glass with ice and fill with 1/3 tea mixture, 1/3 water and 1/3 sparkling water on the top. (Similar to Starbucks, I brew smaller batches of strong tea then add water to serve.) Serve with fresh lemon and extra mint sprigs.

Nutritional Information (per serving): No calories! Just lots of healthy antioxidants from the tea.

I was talking with one of my clients about keeping up motivation to keep going and her comments to me were that it was easy for me because I love exercise. Yes, she is right, I love to exercise .. But there are times when I don't love it so much.

If I don't love it all the time then why do I keep it up?

I exercise for all of the things I have mentioned above.?
I feel good after finishing a workout or achieving my goal.
Yes, exercise has helped me change my body shape .. I'm still working on it but I'm pretty happy with where I am right now.
Yes, I have used exercise to help me lose weight ... I could probably do a bit more about my diet ... well, let's leave that there shall we!
Yes, I have trained for a specific goal .. In my younger years I completed quite a number of triathlons and last year I completed my 6th half marathon.??

My current reason for keeping up my exercise routine ...

Number one .. my health and fitness.? I want to set an example for my kids and my clients.? At the moment my focus at?training is to do what I enjoy and?will help me maintain or improve both my health and fitness.?
Next up, I really do enjoy it and how it makes me feel.? If I haven't exercised for a week or so I start to feel a?bit cramped and stiff and well, blah.

Former WGA president/CEO Johnson dies

Don Johnson was a major player on Chicago's golf scene, a man easy to identify because of his celebrity name, warmth and robust head of silver hair.

Johnson, who died Thursday night at 77 as the result of a heart ailment, served as president and CEO of the Western Golf Association/Evans Scholars Foundation from 1988 until his retirement in 2009.

Under his leadership, the WGA/ESF progressed from near financial insolvency to a solid standing with a $45 million endowment. Johnson also helped maintain a high standard for the WGA's tournaments: the BMW Championship, Western Amateur and Western Junior.

"His leadership resulted in the presentation of world-class championships that were admired and respected throughout the golf world," said John Kaczkowski, who succeeded Johnson as WGA president and CEO. "And Don's focus on building a firm financial base for our Evans Scholars program afforded thousands of young men and women the opportunity to earn their college degrees."

Johnson grew up in Racine, Wis., near a nine-hole public course called Washington Park. At 14, he began selling hot dogs and drinks at the course's refreshment stand.

At 16, he caddied at Meadowbrook Country Club, gaining an early perspective on the path Evans Scholars candidates take in their pursuit of a WGA-sponsored college scholarship.

Johnson, who maintained a solid handicap index of 11.7 at 74, was the medalist in the Wisconsin State Junior in 1953. He earned undergraduate and law degrees from Wisconsin and practiced law in Madison for 26 years.

He joined Nakoma Golf Club and became a WGA director in 1984.

"I've always had a compelling interest in the game," he once said. "Although I made my living as a lawyer, I invested a lot of time in the administration of golf."

During his tenure, 4,000 male and female caddies received college educations as Evans Scholars, and thousands of professional, amateur and junior golfers participated in WGA championships.

He was inducted into the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame in 2008, and the Evans Scholars National Committee presented Johnson with an honorary Evans Scholarship in 2009 for his years of service.

"Don enjoyed a lifelong love of, and respect for, the game of golf," Kaczkowski said. "He was dedicated to giving back to the game through his work with our scholarships and championships, and he clearly succeeded."

University of Washington, Bothell hosts UWB 3 groundbreaking celebration May 25

This Friday, the University of Washington, Bothell community is holding a public ceremony celebrating the groundbreaking for construction on the UW-Bothell Science and Academic Building to be known as UWB 3.

The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. next to the UWB 3 construction site located near the center of campus behind the library. UW President Michael Young will speak as will Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe and Associated Students of the University of Washington Bothell (ASUWB) President Freddie Hensen.

Several dignitaries are scheduled to attend, including Sen. Andy Hill and Bothell Mayor Mark Lamb. The UW Husky Marching Band will perform and Hollie the Husky will also be on hand.

Findings from mouse study could also result in new treatments for infertility

Thursday, May 24, 2012 THURSDAY, May 24 (HealthDay News) -- The discovery of a key gene involved in sperm development could eventually lead to the creation of a new type of non-hormonal birth control for men, a study involving mice suggests.

Researchers found that a gene called Katnal1 is critical to enable sperm to mature in the testes. Finding a way to regulate this gene could prevent sperm from maturing, making them incapable of fertilizing eggs.

This finding also could lead to new treatments for cases of male infertility in which the Katnal1 gene malfunctions and hampers sperm development, according to the study, from researchers at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

The researchers found that male mice modified to lack the Katnal1 gene were infertile. Further investigation revealed that the gene was essential for sperm development and maturation.

Successful trials in mice do not necessarily mean the success will translate to humans, however.

The study was published in the journal PLoS Genetics.

"If we can find a way to target this gene in the testes, we could potentially develop a non-hormonal contraceptive," study author Lee Smith, of the University of Edinburgh's Center for Reproductive Health, said in a journal news release.

"The important thing is that the effects of such a drug would be reversible because Katnal1 only affects sperm cells in the later stages of development, so it would not hinder the early stages of sperm production and the overall ability to produce sperm," Smith said.

"Although other research is being carried out into non-hormonal male contraceptives, identification of a gene that controls sperm production in the way Katnal1 does is a unique and significant step forward in our understanding of testis biology," Smith concluded.

Last week, we launched a new version of Jamendo.com. ?More than just a facelift, the entire technical architecture of Jamendo was overhauled in order to increase flexibility of the site; the purpose was to make it easy to add new features and allow the site to evolve more quickly.

As you know, among the additions are the new player, ten new radio channels and improved search.

Our goal is always for our users to discover and listen to music more easily and for our artists to have a great, effective way to share their art. ?

While we have received some positive feedback, we?ve also heard your criticisms loud and clear, specifically reporting bugs, calling for the return of some old features or criticizing the new track-oriented approach.

There were some technical problems that we needed to solve and we are working on getting it all smoothed out as soon as possible.?Jamendo?s technical team is composed of only three people who handled the huge task of rewriting the site and migrating the new architecture while still maintaining the Jamendo PRO site. The team has been working very hard on solving these problems and many have already been fixed ? artist blogs are now working normally and the forums are up and running again.

We deliberately chose a track-oriented approach in an effort to make search results more accurate, make it easier for users to find music that suits their tastes and to give our artists a better chance at exposure. ?We also wanted to provide a new experience to accommodate the changing ways people are sharing and consuming music. Lastly, we had realized that a huge percentage of albums uploaded to Jamendo were only single tracks as it was.

However, after assessing your feedback, we understand the desire of many artists who remain attached to the album approach and will improve our interface very quickly by enabling:

- album reviews in addition to the current track review option
- display of both album and track reviews on the album pages
- rearrangement of the artist page so new albums are more visible, higher up on the page
- the display of favorite albums in the MyMusic section in addition to the current playlist of favorite tracks
- displaying the number of listens for each album on the album page
- a better presentation of the most recently released albums/tracks.

Another major problem reported was the inability of artists to send messages to their fans. ?This was another function that was temporarily lost during the migration, but a system that allows artists to contact their fans via email has been planned, and users will continue to have the opportunity to become fans of artists they like.

Our search page will also evolve very quickly so it not only displays just tracks, but also search results for relevant artists, albums and playlists.

The social features (friends, messaging between members) will not be integrated into the new Jamendo.?Between Facebook, Twitter and other social networks, we believe it?s essential to better integrate these services into our site in order to allow artists to expand their audience. ?We are aware that currently the number of Facebook ?likes? displayed are inaccurate and we are in the process of resolving that issue.

Please note that there is no need to use Facebook in order to use Jamendo ? this is just optional. Some users were experiencing connection problems that were due to a combination of a bug on our side and a very specific configuration of their browser. This has been fixed.

The Creative Commons license for each track is visible on the bottom of each track page, but as many users had difficulties locating them, we will move them so they are more clearly presented. Of course, Jamendo is and always was a platform where all content is under Creative Commons.

Other problems will be resolved as soon as possible; it?s important to us that the site is as user friendly as possible for users and artists. We remain convinced that if we want Jamendo to grow and enable its artists to reach a large audience, we must take into account new user habits and give the community of members the maximum number of tools to listen to and enjoy music quickly and easily.

This first release of the new version of Jamendo was certainly not perfect, but a ?big bang? was necessary for us to start fresh.?The aggressive reaction of some surprised us because our entire team tries to do their best with limited resources.?Jamendo is a very small company that has been fighting for years to promote free music, find new ways to disseminate it and find new sources of income for artists. We are also frequently harassed by collecting societies that are insistent on collecting royalties for this CC music without respect for our artists? wishes for their music to be free.

Today, Jamendo requires more than 10 terabytes of storage, 40 servers and a bandwidth with peaks of 500 Mbits for managing Jamendo.com, Jamendo PRO, streaming radio channels and more than 350,000 songs.

Our approach is unique and is a threat to the way the traditional music industry has always run. Jamendo allows artists to distribute their music to an unlimited number of users for free and allows users unlimited streaming and downloads.?Jamendo is the largest site that offers these services completely free of charge and without any advertising, all while providing artists an opportunity to generate income!

Singer Tim McGraw announced?on Thursday that he?s going to give away 25 mortgage-free houses -- one for each stop on his upcoming ?Brothers of the Sun? tour with Kenny Chesney -- to wounded or needy service members.

The campaign, which kicks off with a Memorial Day concert for military members at the Beacon Theater in New York, was inspired by the close relationships McGraw has with veterans in his life.

?My sister?s a veteran, my uncle?s a veteran, my grandfather was a veteran, one of my best friends is a veteran,? McGraw said in an interview. ?I?ve known people my whole life who are in service to America. And I think in my position to be able to do something like that is probably the ultimate thing. So to be able to go on tour and provide sort of a stable foundation for a veteran and their family is something I really look forward to.?

No doubt, McGraw?s gesture is a fantastic one. Veterans who?ve given so much get homes, and it?s impossible to quantify the impact that greater awareness of veterans' needs could have on their plight. It does however, raise a question: no matter how well intended, how beneficial are these grand gestures? In short, very beneficial, but it?s complicated.

?It?s a fantastic gesture from someone who has done well and wants to support the troops with something far greater than lip service,? Joe Davis, director of public affairs for the Veterans of Foreign Wars told TODAY.com. ?Supporting the troops means impacting lives, and I know this heartfelt donation will tremendously strengthen 25 former military families in their readjustment to civilian life.?

Jon Soltz, Iraq war veteran and chairman of VoteVets.org, emphasizes that McGraw?s donation is wonderful and generous, but points out that such offerings don?t fix some of the more specific issues that impact veterans on a broader scale. ?We hope he (McGraw) uses the opportunity to call attention to the fact that there are thousands of homeless veterans across the US, and in just the past few years, banks have wrongly foreclosed on a large number of our troops,? ?The veterans community has known about Gary Sinise?s dedication for years, and the public is finally aware now, too,? said Paul Rieckhoff, executive director and founder of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. ?But what Tim is doing is a wonderful effort, too. If you can give a veteran a house, then that?s a huge impact.?

Impact aside, the elephant in the room is this: celebrities are often derided for their involvement in causes, especially if their involvement seems less-than-sincere. Ultimately, and importantly, that?s not the case with McGraw.

"He comes from a military family, and has a real connection with veterans. So many campaigns are only awareness and don?t have a monetary value. He has a cultural competency that everyone doesn?t have,? Rieckhoff emphasizes. ?At a time when most folks aren?t doing anything, we should celebrate folks like Tim who are stepping up."
