I am always looking for a better Twitter client on Android than the official one. Finding one is harder than you'd think. I've tried Plume, Tweetdeck, Tweetverse, Twitterbot, but I always return to the official app, simply because it's the most stable and updates the fastest. That said, it's boring and really lacking in features and configuration options. A new Twitter client, Slices (free), from the makers of Tweetcaster and BaconReader (a Reddit client), presents your Twitter timeline in a refreshing, data-driven way, but it is ultimately too unstable to use and lacks some basic features. I'm not deleting my current Twitter app just yet.?
Intelligent Feeds The killer feature in Slices is the ability to "slice" your Twitter timeline into categories. A slice is very similar to a list on Twitter, except the app automatically creates categories for you, if you like. To start, sign in with your Twitter credentials and allow Slices to extract all the data from your Twitter account. Slices automatically groups all the people you follow into categories, which are presented in a tree diagram from a pull-out menu on the side. I was impressed at how the app instantly grouped the 600-odd people I follow into "Tech & Science" "Business & Money" and "TV & Movies." You can create your own slice too. Unfortunately you can't slice these slices any further.
From the menu, you can tap into an extensive section devoted to discovery. Scroll through topics like humor, celebs, and sports to see top lists to follow, and Twitter accounts related to that category. My favorite category is Live Events, which shows you a live stream of tweets during a trending event, such as tonight's U.S. Open tennis match. This will be a fun feature to use as the U.S. Presidential election heats up as well. Unfortunately, Slices only displays a few trending events and doesn't let you search for one.?
Some Interesting Features, But Misses Basic Ones Apart from organizing all your followers into categories, Slices offers a few neat features I haven't seen elsewhere. You can bookmark Twitter accounts to your side menu, temporarily "zip" or hide annoying users from your timeline, and even tweak the look and sound of an interaction or direct message alert.
However, Slices misses some very basic features, namely support for multiple Twitter accounts, a character counter, and real-time updating. I ran both Slices and the normal Twitter app for a few days and the formerly consistently pushed notifications anywhere from five to 30 minutes after Twitter.
But my biggest problem with Slices is that it crashed constantly on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1.1. I finally uninstalled the app after about a week. ?
Not For Me Slices presents an interesting way to explore the Twitterverse through a unique set of discovery tools. Hyper-engaged Twitters users or those who can spend hours exploring new content through Twitter? ?will probably appreciate most what Slices has to offer. However if you're looking for performance, stick with the official Twitter app for Android for now. The quest continues...

New genetic risk factor for inflammation identified in African-American womenPublic release date: 30-Aug-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Inflammatory marker is linked with increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers
SEATTLE African Americans have higher blood levels of a protein associated with increased heart-disease risk than European Americans, despite higher "good" HDL cholesterol and lower "bad" triglyceride levels. This contradictory observation now may be explained, in part, by a genetic variant identified in the first large-scale, genome-wide association study of this protein involving 12,000 African American and Hispanic American women.
Lead researcher Alexander Reiner, M.D., an epidemiologist at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and colleagues describe their findings online ahead of the Sept. 7 print issue of the American Journal of Human Genetics.
Specifically, the researchers looked for genetic signposts associated with elevated levels of C-reactive protein, or CRP a marker of inflammation that is linked with increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.
"Most previous studies examining the genetic determinants of elevated CRP have focused on tens of thousands of white individuals of European descent," said Reiner, a member of the Hutchinson Center's Public Health Sciences Division. "Since minorities African Americans and Hispanic Americans in particular tend to have higher CRP levels than other U.S. racial and ethnic groups, it's important to understand whether genetic factors might contribute to these differences."
Reiner and colleagues identified several genetic factors linked to CRP that are relatively specific to African Americans. They found a variation in TREM2, a family of genes on chromosome 6p21 that are expressed in white blood cells and appear to be important for regulating the degree of inflammation generated when white blood cells respond to infection or tissue injury.
"TREM genes were recognized relatively recently to be involved in inflammation and autoimmune disorders. Our finding adds further support to the importance of this gene family in generating and regulating inflammatory responses," said Reiner, who is also a professor of epidemiology at the University of Washington School of Public Health.
They also discovered that approximately 20 previously identified genetic factors associated with elevated CRP in whites are also shared among African Americans and Hispanic Americans genes that involve pathways related to innate immunity as well as metabolism of fat and sugar.
Identifying the genetic variants that regulate CRP levels may help researchers settle a point of scientific controversy: whether chronic, low-grade inflammation causes cardiovascular disease or whether it is just a reaction to the disease process of atherosclerosis, also known as hardening of the arteries.
"This finding may allow us to study whether CRP is a direct cause of heart disease or merely an early warning sign," Reiner said. "Moreover, understanding the genes that regulate the inflammatory response in humans could lead to the development of new anti-inflammatory drugs for treatment of an assortment of chronic diseases ranging from diabetes to cancer."
In addition to genetics, environmental factors that are known to contribute to elevated CRP and low-grade, chronic inflammation include obesity, cigarette smoking and estrogen therapy.
While low-grade inflammation may contribute to increased risk of cardiovascular disease and other health disparities among African Americans and Hispanic Americans, prior studies suggest the correlation between CRP and obesity does not appear to completely explain higher CRP levels among people of African descent.
For the study, Reiner and colleagues scanned the genomes of 8,280 African American and 3,548 Hispanic American, postmenopausal participants in the Women's Health Initiative to look for variations in DNA called single-nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs that were associated with elevated CRP. The Hutchinson Center houses the Clinical Coordinating Center of the WHI, one of the largest U.S. prevention studies of its kind involving more than 161,000 women nationwide.
"This pool of genotyping data offers unique and exciting opportunities to search for genetic factors that influence disease risks in the two largest minority populations in the United States: African Americans and Hispanics," said senior author Hua Tang, Ph.D., an associate professor of genetics and statistics at Stanford University. These groups suffer disproportionate burdens of heart disease, certain types of cancer and other illnesses but are under-represented in many ongoing genetic-association studies. "Our ultimate goal is to design better disease prevention, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies so that all people can benefit from advancements in genomics medicine," Tang said.

Most cancers is 1 of the most dreaded conditions in the entire world. The physique cells begin working in an irregular way in the individual struggling from cancer and the tumors are formed in the afflicted location of the physique. Breast, ovarian, cervical and uterine cancers are all those forms of cancers that target only the gals as these are associated to the female human body organs.
If we talk about the uterine cancer, it is in fact linked to the extremely important organ of the female reproductive procedure named the uterus and commonly happens in the ladies involving the ages of 50 to 70 decades. This cancer has diverse styles such as uterine sarcomas, endometrial cancer and cervical most cancers. This post will inform you about cervix cancer. Each and every form has an effect on distinctive sections and tissues of the female uterus e.g. endometrial cancer (also called endometrial carcinoma) is associated to the uterus lining or endometrium. The uterine sarcoma (also named leiomyosarcomas) affects the muscular layer of the uterus and cervical most cancers is related to the reduced part of the uterus.
Between these styles, the endometrial cancer is one that is frequently referred to as the uterine most cancers. The endometrial cancer is so fatal that it is considered to be the third most frequent gynecologic most cancers (following ovarian and cervical cancers) that brings about death to the girls.
This cancer commonly affects the females immediately after the incidence of the menopause (the section in a woman's daily life when menstrual cycle will get stopped). There are some common signs or symptoms of this cancer while these might vary to some extent from particular person to human being.
The most common symptom of this most cancers in a woman is the abnormal vaginal bleeding even after her menopause. On the other hand the excessive menstrual bleeding in a female in her premenopausal time period shouldn't be overlooked too. The other indicators include things like the abnormal non-bloody vaginal discharge, reduced stomach pain, abnormal body weight loss, hard and unpleasant urination and an serious pain all through intercourse.
Each female is essential to know about the basic signs of the uterine cancer so that if she finds any of them in herself, she may urgently get in touch with her medical doctor. The value of trying to find the timely clinical information just after locating some of these signs or symptoms is incredibly significant as it may possibly aid to diagnose the uterine most cancers at some early stage and you will need to know that this cancer can be addressed properly at the early phases. Moreover, if the endometrial cancer is diagnosed just after the full clinical verify up of a woman, the correct evaluate can be taken at the ideal time in buy to prevent more complications.
?Iowans tend to give lots of volunteer time to help nonprofit organizations, but not much money,? says Richard Koontz, director of the?Larned A. Waterman Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center?(INRC).
The?study, released Monday by?The Chronicle of Philanthropy, surveyed charitable giving across the United States and ranked Iowa in the bottom half of all states. Iowans donate about 3.9 percent of their discretionary income to charity, or about $1 billion a year, the study found.
But Koontz says the?Chronicle?study also did not include volunteer hours, a form of charitable giving in which Iowans typically rank high. In fact, he cited a study released in 2009 by the Corporation for National and Community Service found Iowa to be one of the highest ranking states for volunteerism, with 39 percent of Iowans volunteering more than 99 million hours of service a year. The study estimated that work to have an economic value of $1.8 billion.
Koontz says the study?s methodology may have also missed contributions from Iowans because the figures were derived from income tax filings where people itemize deductions, so that people who donate money but don?t itemize their 1040s were not counted. He says giving statistics show that the organizations receiving most donations are churches, and many people don?t itemize their church donations.
He says the study only looked at taxpayers with incomes of $50,000 or more. Since the median individual income in Iowa is only $38,000, it?s possible many charitable contributions were not included in the study.
Still, Koontz says Iowa?s high volunteerism/low giving trend is unusual because in most places, where giving is high, so is volunteerism. He says one of the INRC?s goals in the coming years is to find out why this disparity exists and develop ways to encourage Iowans to provide more financial help to their nonprofit organizations because they play such a significant role in the state?s economy and civic infrastructure. An INRC study released in 2010 showed charitable nonprofit organizations employed nearly 9 percent of Iowa?s workers, who earned 8 percent of the state?s wages.
The report also found that nonprofit charitable organizations are the fifth largest industry group in the state in terms of number of workers, behind only trade, government, manufacturing and education/health services.
?Charitable nonprofit organizations are a vital element in maintaining Iowa?s quality of life, and this study shows they make up a significant sector of our economy, as well,? says Koontz. ?It?s important for the state?s political and economic development leaders to know how important nonprofit organizations are to the Iowa economy and take that into account during their planning.?
The Larned A. Waterman Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center uses resources of the UI?College of Law?and?Tippie College of Business?to research and educate about Iowa?s charitable nonprofit organizations in collaboration with other Iowa educational and charitable nonprofit organizations.
If you are working with a very small (less than eight feet wide) section of kitchen counter space, consider visiting a few local granite dealers in search of remnants. Larger dealers often discard these remnants and only charge a small amount for cutting and installing a small counter top. This is an excellent way to add high style to a small surface, and at a great deal no less.
When getting ready to prime a room that is going to be painted, have your primer tinted so that it is the same color as the paint you are using. The primer will still do its job, but instead of needing three coats of paint, your walls will require only two.
When designing a renovation for your home, consider the specific circumstances of your house. There are many renovations you could do to your home that wouldn?t fit given the weather conditions or other environmental factors of your area. Make sure the changes you want to make don?t rely on a change in the local climate as well.
Make sure that you do not have too many pieces of furniture in a room. A lot of furniture makes the room look smaller. Although these pieces may fit your lifestyle, a potential buyer would most likely prefer to see more open living space. Less furniture would give the illusion that the room is bigger.
Is your home filled with bare walls? Why not create a painting to put on your wall so that your home has a personal touch of flair and elegance. While you may not be an artist, any sort of art on your walls will look better than nothing on your walls.
Are you missing an end table from your living room? Why not create one yourself? Gather a stack of your favorite paperback and hardcover books and stack them on top of one another to the height of your couch. Make sure to stack them according to size; largest and widest on the bottom, and smallest and thinnest on top. Place a coaster on top and you can put your favorite coffee mug or accessory on your newly self designed end table.
Get help! Use home improvement catalogs for ideas and information on ?do-it-yourself? projects. These catalogs offer a great source for a new home improvement projects, especially, if this is your first attempt! You can get step-by-step instructions from these catalogs, as well!
Pay attention to how the sun hits your home and how much sun it receives when choosing paint colors for the exterior. Check out paint samples at various times of day to see how they might look in different amounts of light. Don?t forget to test your trim and accent colors in the sunlight too.
If you can?t find just the right color of grout to finish that tiling project, custom color some yourself! Acrylic craft paint, available at most discount and hobby stores, is an easy and thrifty way to get the perfect grout color. Experiment with small amounts of dry grout, using the paint in place of some of the water needed to mix it, spread onto a paper plate to let dry and you will quickly find the perfect shade of grout for your project.
Remember to account for debris. When you are planning a large home improvement project ? especially one involving demolition ? it is easy to forget about the large amount of debris that is generated. All of that garbage and old material will have to go somewhere, and most people would rather not have it piled up around their home. Consider a large tarp in the backyard to protect the lawn, or rent a dumpster to have hauled away on a designated date.
Create a catching focal point in your living room or hallway by hanging a collection of mismatched silver serving trays. They not only add an interesting extra to your home, but they are mighty fun to collect. Go to flea markets, antique stores or second hand shops, to find the most interesting trays you can display.
Do not skip scraping off old flaking paint before beginning your painting project. Painting over old flaking paint will never yield good results. Go buy a paint scraper and scrape off the old paint before starting. Then take a sander and sand down any rough areas so that your new paint coat will look good.
As you have seen, home-improvement techniques, while various, share many fundamentals. They just vary in terms of jobs and costs. All it takes to decide between them is some research and common sense to find the best tools and techniques that will work with you, your budget, and your home.

Online payments startup WePay has been on a roll lately. The company is processing hundreds of millions of dollars in payments annually, and adding more than 1,000 active merchants per week. But it wants to accelerate that growth even further, by rolling out payment buttons that will allow anyone to add in-line payments to their sites with just a single line of code. WePay is a Y Combinator-backed startup originally formed mostly to make it easier for groups to collect money and make payments together. But it's recently gone beyond just helping out groups, providing an ultra-simple platform for anyone to collect and manage payments online. It's added support for event registration and ticketing, custom invoicing, donations, and e-commerce. A few weeks ago, it even rolled out a white-label payments API and lowered its prices to court third-party developers and better compete against PayPal and others
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? A group of anti-GOP protesters clashed outside of the Republican National Convention with a group of Kansas-based church members who often picket soldiers' funerals.
Tampa police said on its Twitter feed that officers in riot gear separated the two groups for safety reasons on Tuesday.
The anti-GOP protesters marched from a makeshift camp ? dubbed "Romneyville" ? toward the official protest zone created by the city. Along the way, that group clashed with members of the Westboro Baptist Church, which had been protesting homosexuality.
After about 20 minutes, the half-dozen Westboro church members retreated from the protest area under police escort.
No one was arrested during protests on Tuesday. One was arrested Monday and another on Sunday.
Growing human tissue is old hat, but being able to measure activity inside flesh is harder -- any electrical probing tends to damage the cells. But a new breakthrough from Harvard researchers has produced the first "cyborg" tissue, created by embedding functional, biocompatible nanowires into lab-grown flesh. In a process similar to making microchips, the wires and a surrounding organic mesh are etched onto a substrate, which is then dissolved, leaving a flexible mesh. Groups of those meshes are formed into a 3D shape, then seeded with cell cultures, which grow to fill in the lattice to create the final system. Scientists were able to detect signals from heart and nerve cell electro-flesh made this way, allowing them to measure changes in response to certain drugs. In the near-term, that could allow pharmaceutical researchers to better study drug interaction, and one day such tissue might be implanted in a live person, allowing treatment or diagnosis. So, would that make you a cyborg or just bionic? We'll let others sort that one out.

If you have a close look on your body, there will be number of symptoms you can detect beforehand. Also, you will easily figure out sudden changes like skin marks, white patches and others. A human body shows numerous changes as an indication that a serious disease is developing. And, if you catch the signs early, remedy and treatment is possible before it?s too late.
This means you have to check out your body for any unusual signs. And, this you should do every morning. Here are 4 of those signs.
1. Bright White Stripes on Nails
Everybody has white spots on their nails at some or the other point of time. But if there are long white stripes that are horizontal and show discoloration on the surface of the nail then it indicates you are fatigued. And, it is your kidneys that will suffer. This is an indication of your kidneys not able to filter protein from urine. And, this might result in kidney failure.
2. Thin Hair on Scalp
Extreme hair loss indicates thyroid disorder. When you see many hair strands on your hair brush, it means your thyroid gland has gone out of order. This will make your hair fragile and rough. Go and consult a doctor. He would figure out if this level is too high or too less. And, provide you medication for the same.
3. Undereye Circles that don?t Fade Away
If you don?t stay up late or have excessive work to do and then too you have dark circles that refuse to go away, indications are that you are developing allergies. In this case, you have to consult a doctor; he would suggest you to get a test done. On the basis of its result, the allergen that is causing dark circles will be known.
4. Dark, Rough Skin in Armpits
If you are not obsessed with self-tanning then this might be the result of diabetes. Abnormal levels of insulin in bloodstream results in multiplication of skin cells rapidly. And, as a result skin looks thicker and darker. Get a test for diabetes done to determine whether you suffer from the disease or not.
There are many signs you need to be aware of. Don?t ignore even a small skin eruption or a red/white mark. At once, consult a physician and confirm the cause of abnormal signs.
ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? In a study to decipher clues about how prostate cancer cells grow and become more aggressive, Johns Hopkins urologists have found that reduction of a specific protein is correlated with the aggressiveness of prostate cancer, acting as a red flag to indicate an increased risk of cancer recurrence.
Their findings are reported online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Aug. 27, 2012.
The team focused on a gene called SPARCL1, which appears to be critically important for cell migration during prostate development in the embryo and apparently becomes active again during cancer progression.Normally, both benign and malignant prostate cancer cells express high levels of SPARCL1, and reduce these levels when they want to migrate. The team correlated this reduction or "down regulation" of SPARCL1 with aggressiveness of prostate cancer.
"Our findings should allow physicians to not only pinpoint those patients whose cancers are destined to return after surgery, but could also reveal a potential new option for treatment," says Edward Schaeffer, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of urology, oncology and pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Prostate Cancer Multidisciplinary Clinic.
In their study, Schaeffer and lead investigator Paula Hurley, Ph.D., also found that SPARCL1 seems to play a role in predicting tumor recurrence in a number of other diseases including bladder, breast, colon, rectum, tongue, lung, skin and ovarian cancers.
The team is now working to decipher the specific mechanism that controls the gene in hopes of
developing a treatment that can reset SPARCL1 to normal levels and potentially prevent a patient's cancer from recurring. Hurley is currently investigating novel genes that are not only prognostic of lethal prostate cancer but also contribute to prostate cancer progression to metastasis.
According to the American Cancer Society, about 240,000 men in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year; the majority are over age 65.The disease is the second leading cause of death among U.S. men. An estimated 28,000 men in the U.S. will die of prostate cancer this year.
"While many of our patients are initially cured with surgery, some inexplicably have their cancers return," says Schaeffer. "We are working to identify patients at higher risk of recurrence and our ultimate goal is to develop new treatments that would prevent the return of the cancer."
Funding for the study was provided by the U.S. Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program.Corresponding grant numbers are DOD-W81XWH-10-2-0056 and W81XWH-10-2-0046 PCRP Prostate Cancer Biorepository Network (PCBN).Additional support was provided by the Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute YSCA, the Patrick C. Walsh Prostate Cancer Fund at Johns Hopkins, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Early Careers Physician Scientist Award, the American Urological Association Astellas Research Star Award, and the National Institute of Health, with corresponding grant number P3-0CA006973.
In addition to Schaeffer and lead investigator Hurley, other Johns Hopkins researchers involved in this study were Luigi Marchionni, M.D.; Brian Simons, D.V.M.; Ashley Ross, M.D., Ph.D.; Sarah Peskoe, Sc.M.; Rebecca Miller, B.S.; Zhenhua Huang, Ph.D.; Bora Gurel, M.D.; Ben Park, M.D., Ph.D.; and Elizabeth Platz, Sc.D., M.P.H.Other investigators included Nicholas Erho, M.Sc.; Ismael Vergera, Ph.D.; Mercedeh Ghadessi, M.Sc.; and Elai Davicioni, Ph.D., at GenomeDx Biosciences Inc., in Vancouver, Canada; as well as Robert Jenkins, M.D., Ph.D., at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.; and David Berman, M.D., at Queens University in Kingston, Canada.

Five Muslims were murdered in northeast India by an armed gang from the ethnic Bodo community in fresh violence, after more than a month of clashes, police said Sunday.
"A group of seven Muslim villagers in two vehicles were returning home from a relief camp when they came under attack," said Sanjit Krishna, police chief of the western Chirang district, in Assam state.
Five were found dead near Choudhurypara village, about 220 kilometres (130 miles) from Assam's main city of Guwahati, while police are trying to trace the other two.
The party had apparently been trying to reach their village after a few days of calm in the area and had dared to venture out on Saturday from their guarded government relief camp.
An estimated 90 people have died and 400,000 people from both communities are taking refuge in camps spread across four western Assamese districts of Chirang, Kokrajhar, Dhubri and Baksa.
In a separate incident early on Sunday, four Muslim villagers were wounded in an attack by tribal Bodos in Kokrajhar.
The wave of violence, a recurrence of problems that have plagued the volatile region for decades, has had far-reaching consequences in India.
Rumours that migrants from the northeast, who travel widely in India to study or work, would be attacked by Muslims in retaliation for the violence in Assam saw tens of thousands flee southern cities such as Bangalore.
The government has since unveiled wide-ranging efforts to counter Internet content seen as fanning the panic, with orders given to block hundreds of websites and webpages.
The orders even covered material found on the websites of reputed media organisations such as Australia's ABC network or London's The Daily Telegraph, leading to allegations of censorship.
The government also ordered the blocking of half a dozen fake Twitter accounts mimicking the prime minister and targeted two journalists.
MOSCOW (AP) ? A Russian court unexpectedly acquitted opposition leader and chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov on Friday of participating in an unauthorized rally.
Kasparov, an anti-Vladimir Putin activist and former world chess champion, was detained Aug. 17, as he was attending a rally in support of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot outside the Moscow court where three of its members were being sentenced to two years in prison. He was violently rounded up by several riot policemen and thrown into a police van along with dozens of other protesters.
Kasparov also was later questioned after a police officer accused him of biting his hand during the detention.
But the Khamovniki court, where Pussy Riot members had been sentenced, cleared him of charges regarding the rally.
"This is a historic day ? the courts have stopped trusting the police," Kasparov said after leaving the court room, according to his website.
Russian courts are notorious for jailing and fining opposition leaders and Kremlin critics. The law was recently changed regarding public gatherings to dramatically raise the fine for taking part in an unauthorized one to 300,000 rubles (about $9,000).
Kasparov says he's now planning to file a complaint against his detention and a libel case against his accuser.
Kasparov, who is considered by some to have been the best player in chess history, retired from top-level professional play in 2005 to become a political activist. He is a vocal critic of Putin and the leader of the United Civil Front opposition group.
On the look out for an Android tab that can match the iPad in terms of size and functionality? We?ve got an unlikely competitor for you in the shape of the Archos 101 XS. No, stay with us on this?
Archos is not a brand name that?s traditionally gone hand-in-hand with the word ?premium? ? the company?s made a name for itself by hitting the middle of the road and staying there. All well and good for a certain market, but it?s hardly an aspirational approach to business.
But things may now be changing. The newly unveiled Archos 101 XS is a highly impressive machine straight out of left-field, and it could well be the best Android?s got against the iPad.
Meet the 21.5-inch Android uber-tablet
The 10.1-inch 101 SX is pretty, well made and actually thinner than the current iPad by a measure of 1.4mm. It?s powered by am ARM Cortex multi-core A9 processor running at 1.5 GHz, boasts 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, which is upgradable via MicroSD slot.
A 720P front webcam, USB and HDMI slots round things off nicely. Oh, and it?s using an unskinned version of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Schwing.
Coverboard
And then things get really interesting. The Coverboard is a magnetic keyboard case that either sits on top of the screen to protect it, or locks into place to act as a movie stand or full QWERTY keyboard.
When shunted together for travel, the 101 XS and Coverboard are just 1mm thicker than an iPad with Smart Cover ? and a full centimetre thinner than the keyboard-sporting Asus Tansformer Prime. That?s impressive. The coverboard takes its power from the tablet, or can be plugged in ? at which point it?ll act as a charging dock.
All in all, this is a massively impressive offering from Archos. The 101 XS will be out in mid September, and set you back an iPad-worrying ?299.99.
A new TV ad featuring former President Bill Clinton is the latest evidence of a deliberate and potentially risky advertising strategy by the Obama campaign to blitz airwaves with its strongest material months before the general election.
President Barack Obama's campaign is hoping to inoculate itself from what's expected to come: a barrage of commercials from Mitt Romney and Republican independent groups in the fall.
In Obama's latest ad, Clinton endorses the president and his economic policies. It's slated to air in eight battleground states, timed to run right before the Republican National Convention begins next week. The ad is the culmination of an approach Obama's team has followed since Romney became the all but certain GOP nominee in April. The Obama campaign's goal has been to present the former Massachusetts governor as an unacceptable alternative, despite the weak economic recovery and stubbornly high unemployment throughout the president's tenure.
"If you look at the ad pattern, the Obama campaign sees it as a seven-month run and the Romney campaign sees it as a three-month sprint. Everything we're seeing points to that," Elizabeth Wilner, vice president for Kantar/Campaign Media Analysis Group, said. "It's a gamble for both sides, and whoever is right will win."
Ad spending is expected to hit $1.1 billion in the 2012 presidential contest. About one-third of that has already been spent, according to Kantar/CMAG, which tracks campaign ads.
The spending reflects the divergent ad strategies from the Obama and Romney teams. Obama's campaign has frontloaded its ads throughout the spring and summer, seeking to define Romney. The Romney campaign and groups affiliated with it have only recently caught up and exceeded the Obama campaign's spending. Romney and his allies are focusing the bulk of their advertising efforts on the weeks closer to the general election. They hope to capitalize on a successful convention and heightened interest from voters.
The Obama campaign's decision to roll out Clinton now, rather than closer to the election, reflects a calculation that his endorsement will carry more weight than when the airwaves are fully saturated.
"The Republican plan is to cut more taxes on upper-income people and go back to deregulation. That's what got us in trouble in the first place," Clinton says in the ad, set to air in New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada.
Obama, Clinton says, will help rebuild the middle class if re-elected. "That's what happened when I was president," Clinton says.
So far, Obama's campaign has spent $130 million on advertising, compared to about $70 million for Romney. But a trio of Republican-leaning outside groups has spent about $100 million on ads supporting Romney. That's allowed the candidate to remain competitive in ad spending and even exceed the Obama campaign in recent weeks. And when Romney officially becomes his party's nominee next week, he'll be free to spend millions more in money designated specifically for the general election.
Anticipating the ad spending disadvantage, the Obama campaign began its general election ad buys in mid-April.
A barrage of ads hitting Bain Capital, the venture firm where Romney made millions, was released in early May. The ads depicted Romney as a corporate raider who had bankrupted companies and laid-off workers ? an effort to undermine his contention that his experience as a businessman makes him more qualified than Obama to fix the economy. A series of spots criticizing Romney's record as Massachusetts governor quickly followed.
A pro-Obama independent group, Priorities USA Action, was also on the air in the spring with ads slamming Romney's record at Bain. But the group has struggled to raise money and hasn't provided the level of help Romney is getting from allied independent groups.
Romney ceded much of the spring and early summer to those organizations ? Restore Our Future, an independent group formed by former staffers, and to American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS, which are tied to former President George W. Bush's longtime political counselor Karl Rove. The groups have run ads hammering Obama on the economy, the stimulus plan and the health care overhaul.
Romney's campaign has ramped up more recently, airing ads that mostly criticize Obama rather than promoting the GOP presidential hopeful. Romney's campaign received a big assist earlier this month from Americans For Prosperity, an independent group backed by the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, which launched a $25 million ad campaign featuring voters who supported Obama in 2008 but plan to vote against him this time.
No state has seen more advertising than Ohio, where Obama and Republicans have spent nearly $100 million to date. Florida places a close second, while Virginia is third.
Wilner said that despite the Republican cash advantage going into the fall, the level of ad saturation in the battleground states thus far may make it difficult for Romney and his allies to gain significant new traction.
"For Obama, summer time may have proven to be a better time to get a message across than in the fall. Republicans are hoping sheer tonnage of ads will be enough to convince voters not to give another term," Wilner said.
