PARIS (AP) ? European news organizations bleeding money and readers are trying to avoid extinction by asking governments in France, Germany and Italy to step in and charge Google for links to stories the Internet search giant has always gotten for free.
Critics ? including, unsurprisingly, Google ? say the strategy is shortsighted and self-destructive, and the search engine warns it will stop indexing European news sites if forced to pay for links. But publishers advocating a "Google tax" aimed at benefiting their industry point to the example of Brazil, where their counterparts abandoned the search engine and say repercussions have been minimal.
The dispute underscores a fundamental question facing media agencies around the world: Who should benefit from links to online content that is costly to produce and yet generates a fraction of the ad revenue that once allowed newspapers to flourish?
Europe has tried to sidestep Google before. Six years ago, then-French President Jacques Chirac unveiled plans for Quaero (Latin for "I search") as the answer to U.S. dominance of the Internet. The multi-platform search and operating system was supposed to work with desktop computers, mobile devices and even televisions.
Despite millions spent to develop Quaero, it went nowhere.
This week, implicit threats hovered over a meeting between current French President Francois Hollande and Eric Schmidt, Google's executive chairman.
Hollande demanded Google reach a deal with publishers over the copyright dispute and also address the French taxes it escapes by basing its European headquarters in Ireland. Google essentially reiterated a point it made in a recent letter to French publishers: Paris' latest attempt to impose itself would force readers to "Anglo-Saxon" sites based in countries with more favorable copyright laws, such as Britain and Ireland.
Google's post-meeting statement said the discussions dealt with "the contributions of the Internet to job creation and the influence of French culture in the world."
Adding to the pressure on Google in France, a French newspaper reported Wednesday that French authorities are threatening Google with a 1 billion euro tax bill and investigating alleged financial wrongdoing.
Google France denied being notified of such a tax bill and said it will "continue to cooperate with the French authorities." Government spokeswoman Najat Vallaud-Belkacem wouldn't comment on the report in the weekly Canard Enchaine, except to say that if there were a tax probe, it would be covered by laws on fiscal secrecy.
French publishers, along with counterparts in Germany and Italy, are hoping Brazil will be the proof that there is a successful way to confront Google.
After failing to come to terms with Google in the past year, Brazil's biggest papers ? representing 90 percent of circulation ? decided to boycott Google News by essentially making their content unavailable to anyone using the search engine. The result? Negligible losses in Web traffic, the Brazilian papers say.
Brazilian newspapers haven't ruled out reopening talks with Google, if the company whose name is synonymous with "search" agrees to pay for their content. Unlike in Europe, the Brazilian publishers have not turned to their government to act as a mediator or impose a tax as part of their dealings with Google.
"Newspapers live off advertising revenues, like Google. They're our competition and they have billions and billions in revenues globally," said Ricardo Pedreira, executive director of Brazil's National Association of Newspapers.
Still, Pedreira is not convinced Brazil is a good model for European nations. "Every country has a specific reality, and I think there will probably evolve different models in each nation," he said.
Others in Brazil have warned about long-term consequences of the boycott.
Carlos Castilho, a media critic and TV journalist, writing on the press watchdog website Observatorio da Imprensa, argued that the boycott was a backward strategy, because "news is everywhere today and to surround it with walls of copyrights is like trying to dry ice."
The growth of search engines as a way to find information is affecting news organizations in different ways.
Print news was suffering in the United States and Europe long before financial crises took hold in recent years, its business model eroded by television and the Internet. As print advertising revenues have declined, more media organizations are trying to boost circulation and earn more through subscriptions, including charging for online content.
The New York Times is among the most prominent news organizations with a website paywall. The Associated Press and Google have a long-standing business agreement that includes Google licensing of AP content as well as joint efforts to improve news products and services.
European publishers have seen less rapid change in readership patterns as a result of the Internet and have been able to stave off the dramatic losses that gutted American print journalism. Still, competition has grown fiercer and profits slimmer with the onset of the European debt crisis. In France, the once-iconic newspaper France Soir went into liquidation in July. In October, dapd, a major Germany news agency, filed for bankruptcy protection.
German publishers already are getting some government support: A measure is headed through the legislature to force search engines to pay for links that include excerpts of content.
And in Italy, publishers say they are willing to risk leaving Google if the search engine refuses to pay, citing a study that indicates that clicks from Italian readers would drop by 6 or 7 percent ? "a very low percentage," said Isabella Splendore, lawyer for the Italian Newspaper Publishers Federation.
The European publishers insist they are not trying to keep readers from getting information, but that they deserve compensation for use of their intellectual property. But Jeremie Zimmerman, of the French Internet liberty group the Quadrature of the Net, described engaging in the dispute with Google as "idiotic."
"It shows that the industry hasn't understood anything about the Internet and is fundamentally conservative about its future, and defending private interests rather than adapting to technology," he said.
Emma Llanso of the Washington-based Center for Democracy and Technology said that, at least for now, the dispute among governments, Google and publishers is a loss for readers.
"When we're looking at the free flow of information online, how much relevance do national boundaries have?" she said. "As the Internet becomes a primary source of information around the world, governments see a threat or a way to benefit. I think we are seeing a lot of national governments struggling to think of what they want it to be."

A new study found that healthy young adults, aged 18 to 25 years can further enhance their working memory by increasing their intake of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs). Researcher affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh published their findings online on October 3 in the journal PLoS One.
The researchers note that previous human studies suggest that n?3 PUFA deficiency is associated with impairment in mood and cognitive functioning. In addition, some but not all studies suggest that the supplementation of n?3 PUFA in several neuropsychiatric disorders such as mood disorders, schizophrenia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) holds promise as a primary or adjunctive (supplementary). In contrast to seniors or individuals with neurologic disorders, healthy young adults are at the peak of their cognitive function.
The researchers found that n?3 PUFA supplementation improved working memory in these individuals; however, they were unable to determine the underlying mechanism.
The study group comprised 11 healthy young adults who underwent positron emission tomography (PET) using a selective VMAT2 PET tracer before and after six months of n-3 PUFA supplementation (Lovaza, 2 grams/day, containing docosahexaenoic acid, 750 mg/day, and eicosapentaenoic acid, 930 mg/day). The subjects also completed a standard working memory task (the n-back test) and analysis of red blood cell membrane fatty acid composition before and after supplementation. The presupplementation n-back test results correlated positively with plasma omega-3 levels. This finding meant that omega-3 fatty acids they were getting from their diet already positively correlated with their working memory. In addition, performance on the working memory task improved after six months of n-3 PUFA supplementation.
Take home message:
This study suggests that it might be prudent to take a daily dietary supplement of n-3 PUFA. Oils from cold water oily fish, such as salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies, and sardines have a high content of n-3 PUFA. Other oily fish, such as tuna, also contain n?3 PUFA in somewhat lesser amounts. Consumers of oily fish should be aware of the potential presence of heavy metals such as mercury and fat-soluble pollutants like PCBs and dioxins, which are known to accumulate up the food chain. Vegetarian sources of n-3 fatty acids are also available. Flaxseed (or linseed) and its oil are a widely available source of the n?3 fatty acids. Flaxseed oil consists of approximately 55% ALA, which makes it six times richer than most fish oils in n?3 fatty acids. Eggs produced by hens fed a diet of greens and insects contain higher levels of n?3 fatty acids than those produced by chickens fed corn or soybeans. In addition to feeding chickens insects and greens, fish oils, flax seeds, and canola seeds may be added to their diets to increase the n-3 fatty acid concentrations in eggs. When purchasing eggs at the supermarket, select ones labeled ?Omega-3.? Grass-fed beef also contains omega 3 fatty acids.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? A new study shows that jumping can be much more complicated than it might seem. In research that could extend the range of future rescue and exploration robots, scientists have found that hopping robots could dramatically reduce the amount of energy they use by adopting a unique two-part "stutter jump."
Taking a short hop before a big jump could allow spring-based "pogo-stick" robots to reduce their power consumption as much as ten-fold. The formula for the two-part jump was discovered by analyzing nearly 20,000 jumps made by a simple laboratory robot under a wide range of conditions.
"If we time things right, the robot can jump with a tenth of the power required to jump to the same height under other conditions," said Daniel Goldman, an assistant professor in the School of Physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology. "In the stutter jumps, we can move the mass at a lower frequency to get off the ground. We achieve the same takeoff velocity as a conventional jump, but it is developed over a longer period of time with much less power."
The research was reported October 26 in the journal Physical Review Letters. The work was supported by the Army Research Laboratory's MAST program, the Army Research Office, the National Science Foundation, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and the GEM Fellowship.
Jumping is an important means of locomotion for animals, and could be important to future generations of robots. Jumping has been extensively studied in biological organisms, which use stretched tendons to store energy.
The Georgia Tech research into robot jumping began with a goal of learning how hopping robots would interact with complicated surfaces -- such as sand, granular materials or debris from a disaster. Goldman quickly realized he'd need to know more about the physics of jumping to separate the surface issues from the factors controlled by the dynamics of jumping.
Inspired by student-directed experiments on the dynamics of hopping in his nonlinear dynamics and chaos class, Goldman asked Jeffrey Aguilar, a graduate student in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, to construct the simplest jumping robot. Aguilar built a one-kilogram robot that is composed of a spring beneath a mass capable of moving up and down on a thrust rod. Aguilar used computer controls to vary the starting position of the mass on the rod, the amplitude of the motion, the pattern of movement and the frequency of movement applied by an actuator built into the robot's mass. A high-speed camera and a contact sensor measured and recorded the height of each jump.
Aguilar and Goldman then collaborated with theorists Professor Kurt Wiesenfeld and Alex Lesov, from the Georgia Tech School of Physics, to explain the results of the experiments.
The researchers expected to find that the optimal jumping frequency would be related to the resonant frequency of the spring and mass system, but that turned out not to be true. Detailed evaluation of the jumps showed that frequencies above and below the resonance provided optimal jumping -- and additional analysis revealed what the researchers called the "stutter jump."
"The preparatory hop allows the robot to time things such that it can use a lower energy to get to the same jump height," Goldman explained. "You really don't have to move the mass rapidly to get a good jump."
The amount of energy that can be stored in batteries can limit the range and duration of robotic missions, so the stutter jump could be helpful for small robots that have limited power. Optimizing the efficiency of jumping could therefore allow the robots to complete longer and more complex missions.
But because it requires longer to perform than a simple jump, the two-step jump may not be suitable for all conditions.
"If you're a small robot and you want to jump over an obstacle, you could save energy by using the stutter jump even though that would take longer," said Goldman. "But if a hazard is threatening, you may need to expend the additional energy to make a quick jump to get out of the way."
For the future, Goldman and his research team plan to study how complicated surfaces affect jumping. They are currently studying the effects of sand, and will turn to other substrates to develop a better understanding of how exploration or rescue robots can hop through them.
Goldman's past work has focused on the lessons learned from the locomotion of biological systems, so the team is also interested in what the robot can teach them about how animals jump. "What we have learned here can function as a hypothesis for biological systems, but it may not explain everything," he said.
The simple jumping robot turned out to be a useful system to study, not only because of the interesting behaviors that turned up, but also because the results were counter to what the researchers had expected.
"In physics, we often study the steady-state solution," Goldman noted. "If we wait enough time for the transient phenomena to die off, then we can study what's left. It turns out that in this system, we really care about the transients."

Maintaining a marriage requires intentionality. Just like other relationships, if your marriage doesn't receive the necessary time and attention, it will deteriorate.
Couples tend to enter marriages with great expectations, bringing both their own histories of hurt and unmet needs. The unspoken expectation that your partner will finally love you the way you desire to be loved is often a setup for failure.
Apathy and contempt in a marriage are warning signs that your marriage needs your attention, and the number one predictor of divorce is conflict avoidance. So if you and your partner avoid conflict and lack conflict resolution skills, your marriage may be in jeopardy.
Dr. John Gottman, marriage & family therapist and leading researcher on marriage, has conducted studies over the span of 40 years to determine the predictors of divorce. His studies showed that these six characteristics of communication predict the likelihood of divorce with 91 percent accuracy.
If the dynamics in your marriage fit these patterns, your chance of divorce is great:
1. Harsh start-ups. Approaching a conversation or conflict with sarcasm, accusations, criticism or derogatory comments is dangerous for a marriage. Initiating a conversation harshly will likely result in an acrimonious ending without resolution.
2. The four horsemen. Gottman identifies these as contempt, criticism, defensiveness and stonewalling. His research shows that these characteristics of communication with your spouse drastically increases the likelihood of divorce.
3. Flooding. You and/or your spouse overwhelm each other with negativity that causes an emotional shut-down and detachment from your relationship. When you or your partner suddenly barrages the other with criticism or contempt, leaving the other feeling shell shocked, this results in disengagement and often, over time, leads to contempt.
4. Body language. When one or both partners become overwhelmed and flooded, it results in physiological changes in the body. Increased heart rate, a secretion of adrenaline and an increase in blood pressure occur and these physiological responses preclude the ability to effectively resolve conflict. Flooding triggers a fight or flight response, resulting in disengagement and/or stonewalling by your partner.
5. Failed attempts to repair. If conflict is not resolved or stonewalled by one partner, the likelihood of divorce increases. Conflict resolution is imperative in maintaining a healthy relationship. Stonewalling is the lack of willingness to engage in conversation and resolution around a conflict.
6. Bad memories. Couples who get stuck viewing their relationship through a negative lens end up rewriting history that is often distorted. This extreme negative outlook impacts the historical, present and future perception of the relationship and contributes to the demise of a marriage.
Richard Schwartz, another leading marriage and family therapist and founder of the Center For Self Leadership and Internal Family Systems, writes in his book "You Are The One You've Been Waiting For" that marriage is often a set -up for failure from the start because of the expectation that your mate will be your "redeemer" and fulfill all your unmet needs. This expectation will inevitably result in disappointment and discord.

Earlier today, I mentioned that the latest court filing from Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma in the bounty case contains no new facts or legal arguments.
Man, was I wrong.
Attached to the brief is the email sent by former Saints assistant coach Mike Cerullo that resurrected the NFL?s investigation.? In a November 2, 2011 message to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, Cerullo states as follows:? ?So I have info on Saints Joe Vitt Lying to your NFL Investigators on Bounties from 2010, along with proof!!!? I was there, in the cover up meetings, with players and Joe, I love the NFL and want to work there again, but I am afraid if I tell thge [sic] truth I will never coach again in NFL, But I was fired for a situation that the Saints encourage.? All I want is a Job back in the NFL as a QC Coach anywhere, so If talking to you jepodizes [sic] that I will have to get back to you, but The Saints are a Dirty Organization.? Contact me.?
The message contains proof of Cerullo?s alleged bias against Vitt.? As alleged by Vilma earlier in this process, Cerullo had vowed revenge against Vitt for firing Cerullo.? Separately, Cerullo?s zeal to return to the NFL calls into question everything he says.? Also, Cerullo?s reference to being fired ?for a situation that the Saints encourage? requires that claim to be explored and compared to the stated and actual reasons for his termination, in order to properly evaluate Cerullo?s overall perspective and mindset.
The email is attached to a new declaration from Vilma?s lawyer, Peter Ginsberg, who explains that the email was produced by the NFL on October 23, 2012.? Ginsberg contends that the NFL completely removed Aiello?s response.
The Cerullo email is marginally relevant to the effort to disqualify former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue as the bounty suspension hearing officer.? But it will be extremely relevant to the overall appeal and litigation process, given that it makes a full cross examination of Cerullo even more critical to a fair disposition of the case.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran has images of sensitive Israeli military bases taken by a drone that was launched by Lebanon's Hezbollah movement and downed by Israel earlier this month, a senior Iranian lawmaker claimed Monday in the latest boast from Tehran about purported advances in the capabilities of its unmanned aircraft.
The announcement gave no details about the photos ? other than calling the Israeli bases "forbidden sites" ? but it suggested Iranian drones have the ability to transmit data while in flight. It also appeared aimed at warning Israel about the options for retaliation for any possible strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
A prominent lawmaker, Ismaeil Kowsari, also was quoted as saying that the Iranian-backed Hezbollah possesses more sophisticated Iranian-made drones than the one that was downed, including some that could carry weapons.
"These drones transmit the pictures online," Kowsari he told the semiofficial Mehr news agency. "The pictures of forbidden sites taken and transmitted by this drone are now in our possession."
The lawmaker, who heads the parliament's defense committee, said Hezbollah is "definitely" equipped with more sophisticated drones, but gave no further details.
A senior Israeli military official in Israel's northern command said he did not believe the drone possessed a camera, though he noted an Israeli investigation is continuing. He spoke on condition of anonymity under military guidelines.
Hezbollah "won't announce it as long as it doesn't see the need to do so ... That's why we say we will respond to Israel inside (its) territory, should it take any action against us," said Kowsari, a former commander of the powerful Revolutionary Guard.
Iran has claimed that Iranian-made surveillance drones have made dozens of apparently undetected flights into Israeli airspace from Lebanon in recent years. Israel has rejected the account.
Iran's Defense Minister Ahmad Vahid also claimed on Sunday that Tehran has drones far more advanced than the Ayub unmanned aircraft launched by Hezbollah, saying it was not the "latest Iranian technology, definitely." He did not elaborate.
Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah has said the Ayub drone was manufactured in Iran and assembled in Lebanon.
Iran routinely announces technological breakthroughs in its defense program. Last month it claimed to have started producing a long-range missile-carrying drone with a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles).
The Shahed-129, or Witness-129, covers much of the Middle East including Israel and nearly doubles the range of previous drones produced by Iranian technicians, who have often relied on reverse engineering military hardware with the country under Western embargo.
But it's unclear whether the new drone contains any elements of an unmanned CIA aircraft that went down in eastern Iran last year. Iran said it has recovered data from the RQ-170 Sentinel and claimed it was building its own replica.
Iran's claims are impossible to independently confirm because the country's arsenal is not open to widespread international inspection with multinational war games or other cooperation.

An NI 43-101 resource estimate on the Moss project shows Measured and Indicated Resources of 956, 800 gold equivalent ounces with an additional 199,100 ounces in the Inferred category.
Northern Vertex is managed by an experienced team with a strong background in all aspects of acquisition, exploration, development and financing of precious metal mining projects.
The Moss Gold-Silver Project is located in Arizona?s historic Oatman Mining District in Mohave County. The District has previously produced over 2 million ounces of gold principally from high-grade underground operations.
In September 2012, Northern Vertex announced the completion of an updated National Instrument 43-101-compliant Resource Estimate on Moss showing Measured and Indicated resources of 956, 800 gold equivalent ounces with an additional 199,100 ounces in the Inferred category all at a cut-off of 0.3 gpt Au. Gold equivalency is based on a silver:gold ratio of 50:1 and assumes 100% recovery of all metals. The Measured and Indicated gold-equivalent resource at Moss comprises 30,879,000 tonnes having an average gold grade of 0.79 grams per tonne, and an average silver grade of 8.90 grams per tonne. The additional Inferred gold-equivalent resource comprises 7,096,000 tonnes having an average gold grade of 0.71 grams per tonne and an average silver grade of 8.13 grams per tonne.

Northern Vertex has focused work efforts on further expanding the gold-silver resource to the west and east of the main deposit. The Company plans to begin a resource definition drill program to assist its technical team in the preliminary design and modeling of a potential starter pit on the property. The program will focus on two central hills within the property where mineralization is exposed at surface. The drill program is also specifically targeted to convert a substantial portion of the NI 43-101 resources from the Inferred category into the Measured and Indicated categories.
Previous underground sampling of a cross-cut in hill #2 yielded a width of 24 meters averaging 4.9 gpt gold equivalent including 9.14 meters of 10.83 gpt gold equivalent grade (see August 16, 2012 news release). The current drill hole spacing on hill #1 is sufficiently close that cross sections and pit bench plans can be constructed. Through the upcoming drill program, the proposed drill hole spacing on hill #2 is expected to allow for similar cross sections and pit bench plans.
Northern Vertex expects to commence a new drill program in early October 2012. The drill program is intended to provide sufficient data for mine design and mine planning purposes as required for the submission of an application to the Arizona Dept. of Environmental Quality for an Aquifer Protection Permit.
The Lemhi Gold-Silver Project is located 25 miles north of Salmon, Idaho. The Lemhi Property was recently assembled from four underlying property holders?including Yamana Gold?s interest in the Humbug Gold Deposit? to form a newly consolidated advanced exploration opportunity. The project is a joint venture between Northern Vertex (51 percent) and Idaho State Gold Company, LLC (49 percent). Northern Vertex is the operator of the project and has the right to increase its interest to 75.5 percent (See September 21, 2011 news release).
The property contains a shear-hosted intrusive (porphyry)-related gold deposit within cataclasized quartzite and phyllite of the Mesoproterozoic Lemhi Group. Gold and minor silver, copper, and molybdenum mineralization occurs in a series of discontinuous shallowly dipping lenses spatially related to a sub-horizontal quartz porphyry intrusion.
Northern Vertex initiated a 10,000 meter (30,000 ft) drill and resource confirmation program in the spring of 2012. Assay results from the first 33 drill holes of Lemhi Gold Project indicate gold mineralization is far more widespread than originally thought. The goal of the program is to expand the extensive historical gold resource contained on the property and bring it up to NI 43-101 reporting standards.
The Copley Gold Project is located in the emerging Nechako Plateau mining district of central British Columbia, Canada. The project encompasses a 2,926 hectare property, which contains a large gold-bearing epithermal system measuring 7 km long and 2 km wide, and lies on trend to the recent Blackwater-Davidson bulk-tonnage discovery 40 km to the south. Copley?s distinct geological similarities and the presence of magnetic lows all point to the discovery of a potential Blackwater-style bulk-tonnage discovery in B.C.?s Nechako Plateau.
A recent 1,200 meter, 12 hole drilling program conducted on the Copley property successfully identified several large gold bearing structures encountering significant gold intersections over a large area. Results indicate the mineralized zoning is near surface and confirmed that gold occurs in silicified volcanic rocks containing disseminated- or vein-pyrite and anomalous concentrations of zinc and mercury, which are the same associations observed at Richfield?s Blackwater project.
Northern Vertex is focused on the acquisition and development of precious metals properties in Canada and the United States. The Company is led by a strong management team experienced in all aspects of acquisition, exploration, development and financing of precious metal mining projects.
Northern Vertex?s key properties include the Moss Gold-Silver project in Arizona and the Lemhi Gold-Silver Project in Idaho. An NI 43-101 resource estimate on Moss shows Measured and Indicated Resources of 956, 800 gold equivalent ounces with an additional 199,100 ounces in the Inferred category. The Company is aggressivley advancing the Moss Gold-Silver Project toward near-term production and is applying the same strategy to the promising Lemhi project.

LONDON (Reuters) - British police arrested convicted sex offender and former pop star Gary Glitter on Sunday as part of an investigation into allegations of child sex abuse by the late BBC presenter Jimmy Savile, media said.
Glitter was released on bail some 10 hours later. But the arrest - the first to be reported in the case - widened a scandal that has already damaged the reputation of the publicly-funded BBC and the legacy of Savile, a former DJ who was one of the broadcaster's top show hosts and a prolific charity fundraiser.
The head of the BBC's governing body said on Sunday the broadcaster's reputation was on the line, and promised to get to the bottom of the scandal.
A police statement said a man in his 60s had been picked up just after 7 am on suspicion of sexual offences in the investigation termed "Savile and others". The statement did not name the man and a spokesman declined further comment.
The BBC and Sky News identified the man picked up from his London home as Glitter, a 68-year-old who was popular as a glam-rock singer in the 1970s.
Footage on both broadcasters showed Glitter, who was wearing a hat and sunglasses and was not handcuffed, leaving an apartment in central London and being driven away. Hours later, television showed investigators carrying large black bags as they left the house.
Glitter was held by police for about 10 hours. He was seen leaving a police station in central London and, minutes later, return to his apartment, where he dodged questions by scores of waiting reporters and cameramen.
Police later said the man was "bailed to return to the police station in mid-December 2012, pending further inquiries".
Glitter, born Paul Gadd, shot to fame in the early 1970s with the hit "Rock and Roll", trademark figure-hugging shiny silver all-in-one suits, platform shoes and large black hair.
Glitter served two months was jail in Britain in 1999 for possession of child pornography. He then moved to Cambodia, but was deported in 2002 due to suspected sex offences.
In 2006, a Vietnamese court convicted him of committing obscene acts with two girls aged 10 and 11 and sentenced him to four years in jail. On his release he returned to Britain.
Allegations that Savile sexually abused young girls for decades first emerged in an expose on the British TV channel ITV. Since then, police say some 300 victims had come forward.
Victims' allegations broadcast by ITV include claims from one woman that she had seen Glitter having sex with an underage girl in Savile's BBC dressing room while Savile abused another girl. Glitter has denied the claim, according to the BBC.
With the scandal widening, public outrage has increased. A cottage in the Scottish Highlands that belonged to Savile was vandalised overnight, with abusive slogans painted on its walls, local police said.
BLIND EYE?
The scandal has raised troubling questions about the BBC's management and its past workplace culture. Revelations that an investigation by Newsnight, the BBC's flagship TV news show, was shelved last December led to claims bosses at the broadcaster knew about the allegations but kept quiet.
"Can it really be the case that no one knew what he was doing? Did some turn a blind eye to criminality?" asked Chris Patten, chairman of the BBC Trust which oversees the broadcaster, writing in the Mail on Sunday.
The Sunday Times said the office of former BBC director Mark Thompson was alerted about the allegations twice, in May and September. Thompson is poised to take over as chief executive of the New York Times, and the Sunday Times quoted his spokesman as saying Thompson had not been told about the allegations on either occasion.
Thompson has told Reuters that he did not know about the nature of the investigation by the Newsnight programme into Savile, and had no involvement in the decision to axe the report.
The BBC said on its website on Sunday that "Thompson has said the first time he had been made aware of claims that Savile had committed serious crimes and that some had taken place while the entertainer was working at the BBC was after he stepped down as director general".
The broadcaster has announced two investigations as a result of the scandal, and Patten promised full cooperation.
"The BBC's reputation is on the line," he wrote. "The BBC must tell the truth and face up to the truth about itself, however terrible."
When Savile died in October last year aged 84, his gold coffin went on public display and he was lauded as a "national treasure" who had raised millions of pounds for good causes.
A year later, police describe him as "undoubtedly" one of Britain's most prolific sex offenders, and the Vatican said a papal knighthood given to Savile decades ago for his charity work "should not have been bestowed".
Savile's family said it was in despair over the allegations and offered its "deepest sympathy" to abuse victims. It also said it had decided to remove the headstone on Savile's grave and destroy it to avoid it becoming a target for vandals.
Justice Secretary Chris Grayling on Sunday rejected a call by the deputy leader of the opposition Labour party for an independent, over-arching inquiry, arguing that such a process risked taking much longer to get to the truth.
Grayling told the BBC that efforts should focus on finding anyone involved in abuse alongside Savile and bringing them to justice.

WASHINGTON - With an eye on the weather forecast, President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney are launching a 10-day sprint to the finish line in a contest increasingly about momentum vs. math.
A huge storm barrelling toward the East Coast ? and some battleground states ? had both campaigns adjusting their travel schedules and cancelling events. Even at this critical juncture of the campaign, neither side wanted to risk the appearance of putting politics ahead of public safety.
The president was pressing on with a campaign trip Saturday to New Hampshire, while Romney was blitzing through Florida.
But an email announcing that Vice-President Joe Biden's Saturday rally in coastal Virginia Beach, Va., stated that the change was "being taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure that all local law enforcement and emergency management resources can stay focused on ensuring the safety of people who might be impacted by the storm."
Romney cancelled a rally in Virginia Beach that was planned for Sunday, and aides said they were also considering scrapping two other events elsewhere in the state. None of Obama's campaign stops had been cancelled, but he did adjust his travel schedule slightly. The campaign moved up his planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm.
Ten days from Election Day, Obama and Romney are tied nationally. But the president still appears to have more pathways to reaching the required 270 Electoral College votes.
The Obama campaign released a new TV ad Saturday urging Americans when they go into the voting booth to consider Romney's plans to roll back Wall Street reforms, transform Medicare into a voucher-like system and reduce spending on education while at the same time cutting taxes for the rich. The spot will air in Florida, Iowa, Ohio and Virginia, all key battleground states.
The Republican nominee is trying to seize the momentum mantle and turn a wave of GOP enthusiasm into an electoral victory.
"The debates have supercharged our campaign and the Republican team," Romney's campaign wrote in a fundraising email. "We're seeing more and more enthusiasm ? and more and more support."
Obama's campaign pressed forward with a get-out-the-vote effort that aides said had them leading or tied in every competitive state. The president was eschewing the lofty rhetoric of his 2008 run in favour of warning supporters that skipping out on voting could cost him the election.
"In 2000, Gore vs. Bush, 537 votes changed the direction of history in a profound way and the same thing could happen," Obama said in an interview Friday with MTV.
Romney was switching his attention to Florida on Saturday after spending much of the week focused on shoring up support in Ohio. While the Midwestern swing state could be crucial to Romney's re-election prospects, he also faces tremendous pressure to carry Florida, which offers 29 Electoral College votes, the most of any swing state.
Obama carried Florida by just 3 percentage points in 2008 and polls show the candidates tied.
The former Massachusetts governor was scheduled to attend three rallies, the first in Pensacola along the state's conservative Panhandle. He then moves to suburban Orlando before finishing his day with an evening rally just outside of Tampa, the site of the Republican National Convention. Romney was to be joined at all three events by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) ? A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the west coast of Canada, but there were no reports of major damage. Residents in parts of British Columbia were evacuated, but the province appeared to escape the biggest quake in Canada since 1949 largely unscathed.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the powerful temblor hit the Queen Charlotte Islands just after 8 p.m. local time Saturday at a depth of about 3 miles (5 kilometers) and was centered 96 miles (155 kilometers) south of Masset, British Columbia. It was felt across a wide area in British Columbia, both on its Pacific islands and on the mainland.
"It looks like the damage and the risk are at a very low level," said Shirley Bond, British Columbia's minister responsible for emergency management said. "We're certainly grateful."
The National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of British Columbia, southern Alaska and Hawaii, but later canceled it for the first two and downgraded it to an advisory for Hawaii.
Gerard Fryer, a senior geologist with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, said the first waves hitting shore in Hawaii were smaller than expected.
Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie said early Sunday that the Aloha State was lucky to avoid more severe surges after the powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Canada. Abercrombie said beaches and harbors are still closed statewide.
"We're very, very grateful that we can go home tonight counting our blessings," Abercrombie said.
The weather service also canceled a tsunami advisory for Oregon, leaving northern California as the only spot in North America still under a tsunami advisory.
Dennis Sinnott of the Canadian Institute of Ocean Science said a 69-centimeter (27 inch) wave was recorded off Langara Island on the northeast tip of Haida Gwaii, formerly called the Queen Charlotte Islands. The islands are home to about 5,000 people, many of them members of the Haida aboriginal group. Another 55 centimeter (21 inch) wave hit Winter Harbour on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island.
"It appears to be settling down," he said. "It does not mean we won't get another small wave coming through."
Canada's largest earthquake since 1700 was an 8.1 magnitude quake on August 22, 1949 off the coast of British Columbia, according to the Canadian government's Natural Resources website. It occurred on the Queen Charlotte Fault in what the department called Canada's equivalent of the San Andreas Fault ? the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates that runs underwater along the west coast of the Haida Gwaii.
In 1970 a 7.4 magnitude quake struck south of the Haida Gwaii.
The USGS said the temblor shook the waters around British Columbia and was followed by a 5.8 magnitude aftershock after several minutes. Several other aftershocks were reported.
The quake struck 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Sandspit, British Columbia, on the Haida Gwaii archipelago. People in coastal areas were advised to move to higher ground.
Urs Thomas, operator of the Golden Spruce hotel in Port Clements said there was no warning before everything began moving inside and outside the hotel. He said it lasted about three minutes.
"It was a pretty good shock," Thomas, 59, said. "I looked at my boat outside. It was rocking. Everything was moving. My truck was moving."
After the initial jolt, Thomas began to check the hotel.
"The fixtures and everything were still swinging," he said. "I had some picture frames coming down."
Lenore Lawrence, a resident of Queen Charlotte City on the Haida Gwaii, said the quake was "definitely scary," adding she wondered if "this could be the big one." She said the shaking lasted more than a minute. While several things fell off her mantle and broke, she said damage in her home was minimal.
Many on the B.C. mainland said the same.
"I was sitting at my desk on my computer and everything just started to move. It was maybe 20 seconds," said Joan Girbav, manager of Pacific Inn in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. "It's very scary. I've lived here all my life and I've never felt that."
Residents rushed out of their homes in Tofino, British Columbia on Vancouver Island when the tsunami sirens sounded, but they were allowed to return about two hours after the quake.
In Hawaii, the tsunami warning spurred residents to stock up on essentials at gas stations and grocery stores and sent tourists in beachside hotels to higher floors in their buildings. Bus service into Waikiki was cut off an hour before the first waves, and police in downtown Honolulu shut down a Halloween block party. In Kauai, three schools used as evacuation centers quickly filled to capacity.
Fryer said the largest wave in the first 45 minutes of the tsunami was measured in Maui at more than 5 feet (1.5 meters), about 2 feet (60 centimeters) higher than normal sea levels. No major damage was reported.
In Alaska, the wave or surge was recorded at 4 inches (10 centimeters), much smaller than forecast, said Jeremy Zidek, a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. The quake was felt in Craig and other southeast Alaska communities, but Zidek said there were no immediate reports of damage.

Five scientists, including two from Simon Fraser University, have discovered that 30 per cent of our likelihood of developing Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can be explained by 475,806 genetic variants in our genome. Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS) commonly screen these variants, looking for genetic links to diseases.
Corey Watson, a recent SFU doctoral graduate in biology, his thesis supervisor SFU biologist Felix Breden and three scientists in the United Kingdom have just had their findings published online in Scientific Reports. It's a sub-publication of the journal Nature.
An inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, MS is the most common neurological disorder among young adults. Canada has one of the highest MS rates in the world.
Watson and his colleagues recently helped quantify MS genetic susceptibility by taking a closer look at GWAS-identified variants in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region in 1,854 MS patients. The region has long been associated with MS susceptibility.
The MS patients' variants were compared to those of 5,164 controls, people without MS.
They noted that eight percent of our 30-per-cent genetic susceptibility to MS is linked to small DNA variations on chromosome 6, which have also long been associated with MS susceptibility.
The MHC encodes proteins that facilitate communication between certain cells in the immune system. Outside of the MHC, a good majority of genetic susceptibility can't be nailed down because current studies don't allow for all variants in our genome to be captured.
"Much of the liability is unaccounted for because current research methods don't enable us to fully interrogate our genome in the context of risk for MS or other diseases," says Watson.
The researchers believe that one place to look for additional genetic causes of MS may be in genes that have variants that are rare in the population. "The importance of rare gene variants in MS has been illustrated in two recent studies," notes Watson, now a postdoctoral researcher at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
"But these variants, too, are generally poorly represented by genetic markers captured in GWAS, like the one our study was based on."
Simon Fraser University is Canada's top-ranked comprehensive university and one of the top 50 universities in the world under 50 years old. With campuses in Vancouver,
Burnaby and Surrey, B.C., SFU engages actively with the community in its research and teaching, delivers almost 150 programs to more than 30,000 students, and has more than 120,000 alumni in 130 countries.

It is no secret that the United States has an increasingly overweight citizenry and Greene County is no different.
According to 2008 Arkansas Health Department (AHD) statistics, the latest numbers available, 69 percent of Greene County residents are either overweight or obese.
Pat Malone, RN and Certified Diabetes Educator at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center, said the obesity problem was an epidemic.
?You are looking at an epidemic proportion of issues if we don?t intervene,? Malone said. ?It is not just [about] going on diets. Diets don?t work. It has to be a lifestyle change.?
Malone said obesity was particularly bad in the South due to ?regional things? that are ?genetically and culturally linked.?
?We fry everything instead of baking and boiling,? Malone said. ?[These are] eating patterns that are handed down from generation to generation.?
Malone said the meal portion sizes people eat also contribute to obesity.
?You get served double or triple [of a normal portion size],? Malone said.
Malone also said about a third of children aged 10 to 17 are overweight or obese. She said childhood obesity can cause diseases that would normally only occur later in life.
?All you have to do is drive by a playground and we are seeing diseases in our children occurring in six to eight year-olds,? Malone said. ?Our laziness as a nation is the root.?
Malone recommended controlling eating habits by cutting portion sizes and also getting a minimum of 150 minutes of exercise a week.
She said she teaches a class once a month at AMMC on healthy cooking at its Professional Office Building. She said the next class would be on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. and those interested in attending would have to RSVP with the hospital by at least the day before the class.
